A Little New Music Nostradamus
As we gear up to celebrate the last day of 2008 and the first wee hours of 2009 here in London, I’m moved to make a few predictions about what the new year of new music has in store, as is my custom. Like always, feel free to chime in with your own.
- Inspired by the success of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, several major American orchestras will transition to a fully online audition process. An anonymous source will out the Grammy-winning recording of Das Lied von der Erde from the NSO, Rick Astley, and Tay “Chocolate Rain” Zonday as an “embarrassing mix-up.”
- The number of new music blog posts in 2009 will exceed the number of new music performances in 2009.
- I will go crimson with shame at a London post-concert reception when I preface a thundering proclamation about the composer’s responsibility to contemporary culture with “The year is 2008. . .” and am immediately corrected. When word gets back to NewMusicBox headquarters in New York, I will be dismissed and replaced after a tastefully short period of mourning with someone who knows how to Twitter.
Have a great year, and check out Trevor’s list of ’08 records if you want something constructive to do with those gift cards.
