A Little New Music Nostradamus

As we gear up to celebrate the last day of 2008 and the first wee
hours of 2009 here in London, I’m moved to make a few predictions
about what the new year of new music has in store, as is my custom.

As we gear up to celebrate the last day of 2008 and the first wee hours of 2009 here in London, I’m moved to make a few predictions about what the new year of new music has in store, as is my custom. Like always, feel free to chime in with your own.

  • Inspired by the success of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, several major American orchestras will transition to a fully online audition process. An anonymous source will out the Grammy-winning recording of Das Lied von der Erde from the NSO, Rick Astley, and Tay “Chocolate Rain” Zonday as an “embarrassing mix-up.”
  • The number of new music blog posts in 2009 will exceed the number of new music performances in 2009.
  • I will go crimson with shame at a London post-concert reception when I preface a thundering proclamation about the composer’s responsibility to contemporary culture with “The year is 2008. . .” and am immediately corrected. When word gets back to NewMusicBox headquarters in New York, I will be dismissed and replaced after a tastefully short period of mourning with someone who knows how to Twitter.

Have a great year, and check out Trevor’s list of ’08 records if you want something constructive to do with those gift cards.
