AMC Letters of Distinction, Lifetime Achievement Awards Announced

The American Music Center (AMC) will honor the professional accomplishments of six American leaders in contemporary music during its 37th Annual Awards Ceremony at the New 42nd Street Studios (229 West 42nd Street in New York City) on Monday, May 7, 2001, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm. Special honors will be presented to John Duffy, recipient of the American Music Center’s Founders Award, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement in music. In addition, AMC’s Letter of Distinction will be presented to Donald Erb, Hale Smith, Mark Swed, Lyn Austin (in memoriam), and Teresa Sterne (in memoriam). The ceremony will take place as part of the American Music Center’s 62nd Annual Meeting, open to AMC members, the press, and invited guests.

AMC award recipients are selected for their substantial contributions to advancing the field of contemporary American music in the United States and abroad. The 2001 awardees join a celebrated group of fellow composers, musicians, and organizations who have also received this honor including Philip Glass, Elliott Carter, Yo-Yo Ma, Ornette Coleman, Leonard Bernstein, John Cage, Dizzy Gillespie, George Balanchine, Milton Babbitt, Merce Cunningham, Virgil Thomson, the Kronos Quartet, Bang On A Can, and the American Composers Orchestra, among many others.
