The board of directors of the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University has named the twelve composers selected to receive 2008 Fromm commissions. In addition to the commissioning fee of $10,000, a subsidy is available for the ensemble performing the premiere of the commissioned work. The commissioned composers are: Chaya Czernowin, Vienna, Austria; Jason Eckardt, New York, NY; Roger Reynolds, Del Mar, CA; Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Rochester, NY; Alvin Singleton, Atlanta, GA; Kate Soper, New York, NY; Rand Steiger, Del Mar, CA; Ushio Torikai, New York, NY; Chou Wen-chung, New York, NY; Frances White, Princeton, NJ; Olly Wilson, Berkeley, CA; and Yu-Hui Chang, Arlington, MA.

Founded by the patron of contemporary music, Paul Fromm (1906-1987), the Fromm Foundation is now in its fifty-third year, having been located at Harvard University for the past several decades. Since the 1950s, it has commissioned well over 300 new compositions and their performances, and has sponsored hundreds of new music concerts and concert series. “I want to know you,” Igor Stravinsky once said to Fromm, “because contemporary music has many friends but only a few lovers.”

Among a number of other projects, the Fromm Music Foundation sponsors the annual Fromm Contemporary Music Series at Harvard. Applications for commissions are reviewed on an annual basis. The annual deadline for proposals is June 1. Requests for guidelines should be sent to The Fromm Music Foundation.—FJO
