The Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) promotes composition, performance, understanding, and dissemination of new and contemporary music, and has developed a forum through which musicians can discuss and learn about opportunities in new music. Composers and performers are the base of the membership, which is broken up into eight regions throughout the country.

Programs offered by SCI include an annual national meeting, regional meetings, colloquia and seminars, radio programs. SCI publishes monographs, a newsletter of member activities and the SCI Journal of Music Scores. The society also sponsors the distribution of recordings contained in the Journal, an annual composition contest, promotion of performance groups, discussion of new ideas and materials, and the promotion of performance and new compositional techniques. CD recordings of music by SCI members are regularly released by Capstone.

Information is disseminated to members in various ways. SCION (SCI Online News), is e-mailed to members on the first Monday of the month, and includes full listings of contests for composers. Other things include the SCI Listserv, the SCI Newsletter, SCI Composerver, and the SCI Web site includes information on the regional structure, by-laws, libraries, recordings, performances, student information, and member information.
