The Dale Warland Singers have announced Mark Kilstofte as the winner of the 2002 Choral Ventures program. Earlier, Kilstofte and three other finalists were selected from among 254 applicants and commissioned to write a 5-7 minute choral work for the 2002-03 Choral Ventures Reading Session. Kilstofte has now been awarded a $7,000 commission to write a 10-15 minute work to be premiered during the Dale Warland Singers 2003-04 season.
APPOINTMENTS:
David Milnes has been named Music Director of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, taking over for founder and interim music director Jean-Louis LeRoux. Now in it’s third decade, the SRCMP boasts a 12-concert season and the largest annual budget of any organization of its type in America. Having previously led the ensemble in performance and in recording, Milnes spoke enthusiastically about taking on this new role with the ensemble. “I feel passionately about championing contemporary new music from around the world and welcome the opportunity to be an enthusiastic and vocal advocate here in San Franciscio.”
Twenty-six-year-old composer Daniel Kellogg has been selected as the 2002-2004 Young Concert Artists Composer-in-Residence. While on the YCA roster, Kellogg will write commissioned works for two YCA member performing artists and receive management and promotion support from the YCA staff.
St. Luke’s Composer-in-Residence Joan Tower has announced the appointment of Daniel Bernard Roumain to the newly-created position of St. Luke’s Assistant Composer-in-Residence. Roumain will assist Tower in developing and curating “Second Helpings,” a concert series featuring premiere and repeat performances of contemporary music, which St. Luke’s began in 1994. This year’s season will include commissions from Jane Ira Bloom and Pamela Z, in addition to works by Philip Glass, Jon Deak, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Libby Larsen, Alvin Singleton, and John Harbison.
Dan Locklair will be Composer-in-Residence for the Brevard Music Festival 2002 (14 June – 4 August) in Brevard, North Carolina. In this post he will oversee rehearsals and performances of his works, present two public lectures, teach and present master classes to the Center’s composition students.
