The Friday Informer: Trapped in the 21st Century

Movie of the Week

R. Kelly gives Wagner a run for his money with that “Oh, shit!” leitmotif and the announcement of the 13th installment of Trapped in the Closet.

I had to miss the second half of the Kirov’s Ring production here in NYC, but thanks to Alex, in the end I might have really just saved myself 9 hours and 58 minutes. Elsewhere in opera news, what do socialites and sopranos (both the singing and the New Jersey kind) have in common? More than you might think. I wonder if they’re open to suggestions. Regardless, I can’t wait to see the reviews.

The opera field isn’t the only game playing crossover this week. We’ve got more of that classical clubbing going on, conservatory harpists going astray, and an instance of a Norwegian death jazz combo (?!?) playing King Crimson covers. I mean, maybe no one sets out to be a smooth jazz player, but seriously, what are they feeding them up there?

Marketing that piggybacks on these crossover trends, however, is working out less well.

Blood pressures are way up in Boston, but Kyle is feeling calmer by the week. Maybe it’s the lovely music? Someone should FedEx a CD to Frank Zappa’s wife, stat.
