First of all, I am looking for something that stimulates and challenges me intellectually, emotionally, and musically. Generally, my first impression (either from looking at a score, listening to a recording, or preferably, both) makes a tremendous influence on my opinion of a piece, but of course that can quickly change. I am looking for music that I can relate to very specifically, as the easier it is for me to identify with a piece, the more lasting appeal it has for me over the long term. Personally, I like to have a balance of music that is both exciting and individualistic, yet is not overly wrapped up in striving for innovation (for its own sake) or commercial appeal.
