NewMusicBox asks: What are your top five “outside the industry” music favorites?
As often as we argue about what to call it, there is a point of musical interest that brings each reader to NewMusicBox. But we also recognize that it’s a big musical world of porous boundaries, and that we each also carry the influence of a vast and varied catalogue of “other” music that we love, taking us well beyond the styles and techniques that usually grace these pages. For whatever reason, it is music that falls beyond our professional involvement or interest but still speaks strongly to our personal musical tastes and sensibilities.

In honor of our fifth anniversary, we stepped outside of the Box and asked of few those deeply entrenched with us in this American new music world to expand the sphere of community influence by sharing five important pieces of music that fall outside their professional creative instincts—the music that means the most to them when they’re out of the studio and off the stage.

When the invitations went out, we had no idea how the lists coming back to us would look. The response to the project was immediately enthusiastic and the contributions as interesting and surprising as we could have hoped. While preparing a month of content geared toward a discussion of pushing on boundaries, it was exciting to see the connections unfold and welcome some new “new music” into the Box. Enjoy!
