Gordon Beeferman

New York, NY

GORDON BEEFERMAN is a composer, pianist, and improviser from New York City. An eclectic and omnivorous musician who straddles numerous genres, he has created and performed innovative opera, chamber and orchestra music, avant-jazz, and numerous collaborations with choreographers, writers, and video artists. Beeferman leads multiple groups which perform his compositions, including an Organ Trio; Other Life Forms, a quartet; and the 7-piece Music for an Imaginary Band, a "commanding avant-jazz ensemble "(Time Out New York). Beeferman’s compositions have been performed by the Momenta Quartet, New York City Opera orchestra, American Brass Quintet, Minnesota Orchestra, Albany Symphony, California EAR Unit, Talea Ensemble, Quartet New Generation recorder collective, and others. His chamber opera The Rat Land, written with librettist Charlotte Jackson, was praised as “complex and daringly modern...gritty, fidgety and intriguing” by The New York Times, and excerpts have been previewed by the New York City Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and Improvised and Otherwise Festival. He and Jackson are currently workshopping their second collaboration, The Enchanted Organ: A Porn Opera, scenes of which have been performed to sold-out theater and nightclub audiences in downtown Manhattan. Beeferman’s collaborations with choreographers have been produced in New York at the Joyce SoHo, Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, The Chocolate Factory, and Abrons Arts Center. A "fully liberated pianist" (Cadence Magazine), Beeferman has performed in a wide range of settings, from concerto soloist to free-improviser. An active member of the New York contemporary music scene since 1998, he has performed at Roulette, MATA Festival, the Vision Festival, and on tour with the Philip Glass Ensemble in Einstein on the Beach, as well as in recent AIDS Quilt Songbook concerts that he has co-curated in New York and Philadelphia. His recordings are available on Clang, OutNow, Generate, Genuin, and Summit Records; his 2015 release, Four Parts Five (innova recordings) is an intense half-hour quintet composition that straddles minimalist, modernist, and avant-jazz aesthetics – “packed with humour, mischief, and an urge to dance” (The Wire). He has received commissions from the Fromm Foundation, the BMI Foundation, and Concert Artists Guild, three BMI Student Composer Awards, a Tanglewood fellowship, and residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, the Copland House, and Ucross. He is a 2016 New York Foundation for the Arts fellow.

Letter to the Editor: Why Ban the Piano?

Seriously, folks, don't you think art-music is marginalized enough in this society, without a righteous diatribe from the inside against the whole family of keyboard instruments?
