Missy Mazzoli

Missy Mazzoli was recently deemed “one of the more consistently inventive, surprising composers now working in New York” (New York Times) and “Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart” (Time Out New York). Her music has been performed globally by the Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird, pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Jennifer Koh, the Detroit Symphony, the American Composers Orchestra, New York City Opera, the Minnesota Orchestra, Dublin’s Crash Ensemble and many others, and she has lent her skills as an arranger and orchestrater to indie bands around the world. She also performs and tours extensively with Victoire, a collective of New York-based musicians dedicated to performing her compositions. Missy is Composer-in-Residence with Opera Philadelphia, Gotham Chamber Opera and Music-Theatre Group, and in 2011-2012 was in residence with the Albany Symphony. In February 2012 her first chamber opera Song from the Uproar had a sold-out premiere run at venerable New York venue The Kitchen. The Wall Street Journal called this work "both powerful and new", and the New York Times claimed that "in the electric surge of Ms. Mazzoli's score you felt the joy, risk and limitless potential of free spirits unbound." Time Out New York named Song from the Uproar Number 3 on its list of the top ten classical music events of 2012. The last twelve months have seen several significant premireres including SALT, a multimedia work for cellist Maya Beiser and vocalist Helga Davis first performed on the BAM Next Wave Festival; Bolts of Loving Thunder, performed on tour by pianist Emanuel Ax; River Rouge Transfiguration, premiered by the Detroit Symphony; and the Carnegie Hall premiere of You Know Me From Here, for Kronos Quartet. The next few months include premieres by Victoire, the LA Philharmonic and the Young People’s Chorus of New York. Missy is the recipient of four ASCAP Young Composer Awards as well as a Fulbright Grant to the Netherlands. She is currently on the composition faculty at Mannes College of Music, has taught at New York University and Yale University, and from 2007-2010 serevd as Executive Director of the MATA Festival in New York City. Her music is published by G. Schirmer.
