Come On Irene

It feels so strange to be writing a post for NewMusicBox from the site’s geographic home of New York, but that’s just what I’m doing today: I’m in town for the dry part of the weekend to catch a performance of my string quartet by the excellent Locrian Chamber Players. It feels so strange to be writing a post for NewMusicBox from the site’s geographic home of New York, but that’s just what I’m doing today: I’m in town for the dry part of the weekend to catch a performance of my string quartet by the excellent Locrian Chamber Players. It was exactly the experience I’d hoped for: A terrific rendition of my piece; first encounters with the without-exception compelling music of colleagues Eve Beglarian, David MacDonald, Robert Paterson, and Julia Wolfe, and my first live Dan Visconti piece (NMBx represent); and of course meeting and hobnobbing with plenty of people I’d known about but never actually met. I also stole into the nearby Columbia U music library and spent some time perusing their impressive collection of periodicals which included both Wire and the Neue Musikzeitung, excitingly.

Because my main concern now is making good my escape before Hurricane Irene arrives, I’ll keep this post short. I do want to encourage everyone reading this, however, to investigate the Locrian Chamber Players’ 2011 Call for Scores and at the very least mark your calendar for future performances: You have to experience the group’s combination of fearsome onstage talent, astute and open-minded programming sense, and welcoming attitude (both personal and aesthetic) for yourself.
