John Luther Adams has been named among the ten recipients of the 2011 Heinz Awards. The awards, announced this morning by Teresa Heinz and the Heinz Family Foundation, each carry $100,000 for unrestricted use and a medallion. They will be presented at a ceremony on November 15 in Washington, D.C.

The winners of this year’s special focus on the environment also include a marine ecologist, a pair of documentary filmmakers, an ice core researcher, and a leader in biomimicry. A gallery showcasing the winners and their work is available here.

Established by Teresa Heinz in 1993 to honor the memory of her late husband, U.S. Senator John Heinz, the awards celebrate the accomplishments and spirit of the Senator by recognizing outstanding individuals for their contributions in the areas of the arts and humanities, the environment, the human condition, public policy, technology, the economy, and employment.

Nominations are submitted by an anonymous council of nominators and are reviewed by jurors appointed by the Heinz Family Philanthropies. The award recipients are ultimately selected by the board of directors.
