Douglas Shadle

Douglas Shadle is a musicologist at Vanderbilt University who specializes in the history of American symphonic music and symphony orchestras. His first book, Orchestrating the Nation: The Nineteenth-Century Symphonic Enterprise (Oxford, 2016), won the American Musicological Society’s inaugural H. Robert Cohen/RIPM Award in 2018 and an ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award in 2017. With John R. Schmidt, Shadle is the co-editor of Andrew Patner’s posthumous A Portrait in Four Movements: The Chicago Symphony under Barenboim, Boulez, Haitink, and Muti (Chicago, 2019). He has also contributed pieces to The New York Times, I Care if You Listen, and the blogs for Naxos Records, Oxford University Press, and Q2 Music.
