Hala Shah is a choreographer, dancer, and writer. Her 2015 solo “Oscillate,” choreographed to original music by accomplished composer Peter Michael (Mike) von der Nahmer, won the Audience Favorite Award in the Joy of Motion Dance Center’s Dance Project concert at the Jack Guidone Theater in Washington, DC. She was commissioned in 2014 by the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center to choreograph “Mashrabiya” as part of Beyond Sacred: Unthinking Muslim Identity program. Set to original music by Mike, “Mashrabiya” mined her personal experiences as a mixed heritage Muslim-American. Her work with Mike has also been presented at GK Arts Center through Periapsis Music and Dance Open Series, the JCC Manhattan, and Nimbus Dance Works’ OFFLINE series. Hala currently performs with Asia Duo Dance Company, and previously danced with Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company and El Teatro de Danza Contemporanea. She has performed on tour in Jordan and Central America, and has several years of experience teaching ballet and contemporary dance to middle and high school students. Hala trained at the Washington School of Ballet and studied flamenco dance with José Greco. She holds a BA in journalism and Middle Eastern studies from NYU, and a MFA in Dance Choreography and Performance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She has also writen for Dance Magazine and Dance Teacher magazine.
