George Crumb: Metamorphoses, Book 2

Premiere recording of a new masterpiece by George Crumb

The Latest Update

Covid delaying production

Posted on July 30, 2020 by Bridge Records

As with many things, COVID-19 has delayed the production of this exciting new recording. We’re all excited to get into the studio to record as soon as it is safe to do so.

In the meanwhile, here’s a sample of Marcantonio Barone’s recording of Metamorphoses Book I!

Composer George Crumb is one of the grandmasters of American art music. His compositional voice has been an influential and honored part of the American and global soundscape since the 1960s. We are seeking support for the recording of a major new work by Crumb, Metamorphoses, Book II (2018), to be recorded by pianist Marcantonio Barone. Book II, (comprising ten pieces), lasts approximately 45 minutes, with each of the pieces based on a well-known painting–a latter day Pictures at an Exhibition. Bridge Records, Inc. will produce and release these performances in a high-quality recording that will be distributed online and physically to a worldwide audience. Producer David Starobin has worked with George Crumb for 45 years, culminating in his oversight of Bridge’s “Complete Crumb Edition” series, which has received numerous awards, including a Grammy award for Star-Child (2000), and a Grammy Nomination for Ancient Voices of Children (2005).

Pianist Marcantonio Barone has worked closely with George Crumb on the recording of the premiere recordings of Crumb’s Spanish Songbook and American Songbook cycles, as well as the recent premiere recording of Yester-yearMetamorphoses Book II is dedicated to him.

The recording will take place at Swarthmore College in Philadelphia, which will allow George Crumb (now at age 90) to attend all recording sessions, and provide oversight during the rehearsals and sessions. Having the composer’s insights into his highly-detailed scores has proven invaluable during the past 38 years of creating Bridge’s “Complete Crumb Edition”.

American pianist Marcantonio Barone made his debut at the age of ten at a Philadelphia Orchestra children’s concert. He has also performed as soloist with the Saint Louis and Houston Symphony Orchestras, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has collaborated with such eminent conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Leon Fleisher, Arther Fiedler, and Barry Tuckwell, and has performed in solo recitals at the Metropolitan Museum and at Weill Recital Hall in New York, at the Wigmore Hall in London, and at the Large Hall of the Saint Petersburg Filarmoniya.
