Brooklyn, NY ~ The electric guitar quartet Dither announces the sixth Dither Extravaganza! – a raucous festival of creative music and art, taking place this year at the 17 Frost Theater of the Arts in Williamsburg. The Extravaganza showcases a cross-section of New York’s diverse experimental music scene, including artists whose backgrounds span jazz, classical, metal, electronica and the avant garde. It has been dubbed an “official concert on the edge” (The New Yorker) and ”The here and now of New York’s postclassical music scene” (Time Out NY)

Dither will perform throughout the evening in various permutations, featuring a rousing rendition of Rugby, one of John Zorn’s notorious improvisational game pieces, and a set with renowned guitarist Nels Cline. Dither will also perform Tristan Perich’s epic Interference Logic for guitars accompanied by an orchestra of 1-bit electronics.

Additional performers include: Rabbit Rabbit, the formidable duo of violinist Carla Kihlstedt and Matthias Koole; Indie vocalist Glasser joined for a Renaissance-inspired set with bassist Eleonore Oppenheim and multi-instrumentalist Robbie Lee; David Grubbs of Gastr del Sol, performing songs and compositions with Mantra Percussion; virtuoso pipa player Min Xiao-Fen performing an intimate solo set; Cellist Ashley Bathgate of Bang on a Can performing works by Andrew Norman, Timo Andres and Jacob Cooper; a solo song set from Toby Driver of Kayo Dot with drummer Keith Abrams; Tristan Kasten-Kraus and Evan Runyon of Real Loud performing Giacinto Scelci’s Kshara for two double basses.

The Extravaganza returns!

We are delighted to announce that the 2016 Dither Extravaganza is going down on Dec 4 at the 17 Frost Theater of the Arts in Williamsburg! Stay tuned for the full line-up and more details soon!

The Dither Extravaganza! is a raucous festival of creative music and art hosted by the electric guitar quartet Dither. The Extravaganza showcases a cross-section of New York’s diverse experimental music scene, featuring artists whose backgrounds span jazz, classical, metal, pop, electronica and the avant garde. The event has been dubbed an “official concert on the edge” by The New Yorker and ”the here and now of New York’s postclassical music scene” by Time Out NY.

The Extravaganza is set up as an all-evening gathering with wildly contrasting musical acts throughout the night. There are no fixed seating arrangements (though chairs are available for those who need them) and the audience is allowed to come and go as they please. Admission is set at the lowest possible price ($8 in previous years) and aim to create an explorative atmosphere in an alternative space.

Dither appears in various formations throughout the night, alongside an array of emerging and established performers. We seek artists who perform their orginal work, as well as ensembles who collaborate with composers. We are also interested in artists who build their own instruments, and compositions which use visual and theatrical elements.

Highlights from past Extravaganzas include: guitarist/composer Lee Ranaldo joining Dither for his massive Dither Event; Paula Matthusen’s Portable, a choreographed composition for home-made suitcase radios; Ikue Mori (electronics) and Zeena Parkins (harp) performing as Phantom Orchard; So Percussion and Grey McMurray offering original compositions from their multimedia project where (we) live; Guitarist Marc Ribot performing transcriptions of the music of John Cage; JACK quartet performing John Zorn’s twisted Necronomicon; TILT Brass performing Lois V. Vierk’s enthralling Jagged Mesa; a twenty piece Guitar Orchestra performing Phill Niblock’s microtonal epic 2 Lips.

The Extravaganza has taken place at The Invisible Dog Art Center, The Gowanus Loft, and St. Anne & The Holy Trinity Church. It has been supported by The Brooklyn Arts Council, New Music USA and sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery.

The next Dither Extravaganza! isplanned for December 2016. The full details and line-up will be announced in the Fall. Here is a complete list of past performers and composers!
