Boston New Music Festival Goes Virtual!

Posted on August 11, 2020 by Juventas New Music Ensemble

In light of COVID, we are re-envisioning the Boston New Music Festival in a new virtual format.  The 2020 Virtual Boston New Music Festival (vBNMF) will run from October 30 – November 15, 2020 and registration is now open. While the virtual format is disappointing in some ways, it offers new opportunities. Boston has one of the most vibrant contemporary music scenes in the country and one of the goals of the festival has always been to share this under-told story.  This year’s virtual format will for the first time allow a global audience to immerse themselves in our city’s music scene.  In a time when people can’t be together physically, we also believe that vBNMF will offer a much needed opportunity for Boston’s local ensembles to come together and support one another during this challenging time creating a stronger community of music making that will extend far beyond the end of the current crisis.

Boston New Music Festival Registration Opens

Posted on April 25, 2020 by Juventas New Music Ensemble

We have just opened our registration portal and the first few ensembles have signed up!  We are also thrilled to announce that the festival will commence with a Festival Keynote concert generously hosted by Tufts University, featuring short 10-15 minute sets by 6-7 ensembles.

The Boston New Music Festival (BNMF) is a three-week showcase of our city’s contemporary music scene.  Ensemble’s stage their own concerts and benefit from joint publicity and a festival pass program designed to grow our mutual audiences.

Despite making appropriate preparations should postponement be necessary due to COVID-19, we are continuing to plan the 4th Biennial Boston New New Music Festival and remain cautiously hopeful that it will be able to proceed as scheduled on October 24 – November 15, 2020. Looking to the light at the end of this dark tunnel when we are finally able to gather once more in concert halls, whether this fall or later, the 4th Biennial BNMF will fulfill an especially deep need for live music and human connection.

Founded in 2016 and organized annually by Juventas  New Music Ensemble, the Boston New Music Festival (BNMF) showcases Boston’s new music community through performances, events, and symposia. The Greater Boston Area is home to 40+ ensembles, and the festival celebrates the region’s collective talent and highlights Boston as one of the most active hubs of contemporary music in North America. The BNMF also serves as a vital gateway for audiences to immerse themselves in today’s most innovative contemporary classical music while connecting them to new ensembles and performers–both of which help strengthen the region’s music community. Additionally, the BNMF advances Juventas’ mission of performing the works of emerging composers and promoting new music as repertoire.

The BNMF has become a cornerstone of Juventas’ annual programming. When then Artistic Director Lidiya Yankovskaya founded the festival, she envisioned a vibrant gathering that would showcase the works of emerging composers and highlight the talent of the region’s new music ensembles. Since the inaugural festival in 2016, the BNMF has grown from a one-night event with a handful of ensembles to a three-week festival with 14 participating organizations. The 2018 festival gave Boston audiences the opportunity to hear music from over 50 composers from around the world, and helped cultivate national and international recognition for the city as a hub of musical innovation. Last year’s lineup featured the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), Boston Musica Viva, Boston Opera Collaborative, Radius Ensemble, Transient Canvas, Boston Conservatory Contemporary Performance Program, Boston New Music Initiative, Sound Icon, New Gallery Concert Series, Black Sheep Contemporary Ensemble, Kadence Arts, Semiosis Quartet, Area 9 Quartet, and Juventas. Since its launch in 2016, the festival has fostered audience growth across ensembles, helped forge new collaborations, and created a shared understanding that the festival is greater than the sum of its parts.

The 2018 BNMF  also marked the beginning of a new festival feature: the Keynote Concert (Keynote). The Keynote was a one-night event that featured preview performances by participating ensembles to provide audiences with the opportunity to hear the full range of festival offerings in a single concert.

2018 also marked the launch of our new festival pass, which allowed access to all festival events for a single flat fee. This model helps encourage community-building and collaboration between ensembles’ leadership and musicians, and encourages audience members to explore ensembles they are not already familiar with. The festival pass represents a milestone in the BNMF’s evolution, and brings us closer to our vision of a city-wide annual celebration that supports ensembles, musicians, composers, and audiences while shining a spotlight on Boston’s new music pioneers.

The Boston New Music Festival strengthens Boston’s vibrant musical ecosystem and fosters the city’s reputation as the epicenter of new music. BNMF showcases the brightest emerging composers of our time as well as the incredible music community in Boston that is bringing contemporary classical music to life.
