Katherine Balch Named California Symphony Young Composer-in-Residence

The California Symphony and its Music Director Donato Cabrera have announced that Katherine Balch has been selected as the orchestra’s new Young American Composer-in-Residence for the three-year period from August 1, 2017 through July 31, 2020.

Balch (b. 1991) is currently pursuing a DMA in Composition at Columbia University where she is studying with Georg Friedrich Haas. Her nine-minute orchestra composition Leaf Catalogue was performed by the Minnesota Orchestra at the 2017 Future Classics concert which culminated the 2017 Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute and was also featured during the American Composers Orchestra’s 2016 Underwood New Music Readings.

“Katherine’s music has a depth of emotion and sense of assuredness that is immediately audible from the moment you begin listening to one of her pieces,” said Cabrera. “I look forward to working with Katherine in nurturing her considerable talent and championing the works that she will compose for the California Symphony.”
