Just two months after the Music Publishers Association (MPA) announced the winners of the 2019-2020 Paul Revere Awards for music engraving and publication design, which had been delayed due to the pandemic, the 2021 Paul Revere Awards were announced during the 2021 MPA meeting, which was held virtually on June 11, 2011. Among the first, second, and third prize winning scores, adjudicated in 11 different categories, were an unprecedented 10 publications of scores by Black American and Latine American composers, both new works and new editions of older repertoire. Among the award winning publications were orchestral scores by Alvin Singleton, William Grant, and Robert Sierra, chamber works by Florence Price and Ulysses Kay, and an ensemble work by Julius Eastman.
In addition to the Revere Awards, Nashville Songwriters Association International President Bart Herbison received the MPA’s Arnold Broido Award for Copyright Advocacy and the late composer, publisher, and former MPA president Lauren Keiser posthumously received the MPA Lifetime Achievement Award. There were also a few presentations during the two-hour meeting. Peter Grimshaw, from BTM Innovation, spoke about BTMI’s new In©, a platform available to all publishers to assist their clients in seeking permission for any sort of usage without paper contracts. Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) CEO Kris Ahrend gave an update about–and also urged all MPA members to join–this recently formed non-profit entity which administers blanket mechanical licenses to eligible streaming and download services (digital service providers or DSPs) in the United States, and then collects royalties due under those licenses and pays member songwriters, composers, lyricists, and music publishers.
