Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, has initiated a new program to financially support artists and nurture their creative process during these challenging times—Works & Process Virtual Commissions. The creators and artists selected have all recently been featured at Works & Process, were supposed to be featured at Works & Process and have had their programs cancelled, or who are part of the fall season. These artists from a wide variety of genres have been commissioned to create new works, less than 5 minutes long, while observing physical distancing guidelines, that will premiere on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube every Sunday and Monday at 7:30pm.
“The initiative started when we started to hear from artists that their gigs were being cancelled and they were not receiving compensation of any kind,” explained Duke Dang, the General Manager of the Works & Process series at the Guggenheim. “As an organization that has always supported artists and championed the creative process and new works, we felt that we could continue to do it right now, and felt it was essential to do so as artists are struggling and we should do something to help. While we have had to revise our budget for 2020 including salary cuts, we have not reduced our artists’ fees and set aside $20,000 for this initiative, within a day our board matched the $20,000 and subsequently smaller donations have supported the fund, so we have granted over $40,000 in commissioning fees.
“Once commissioned the artists have carte blanche. We created the frame work, but ultimately we left it to the commissioned artists to create knowing that the intended audience would be viewing the works on our social media platforms. Looking to the future, from this body of work, we hope there will be seeds that we can germinate and expand into works that can be performed live when we emerge from this pandemic.”
